How to hold my syrian hamster?!?
He’s about 11 weeks old now… I haven’t tamed him yet..
Is this too late to tame him!? :’(
I got him about 3-4 weeks ago and I didn’t know when I was supposed to start holding him.. D:
But now everyday I’m talking to it but I can’t seem to pet it because it’s afraid of me..
And I can’t hold it cause I’m afraid it will bite me. I held it once like 2 weeks ago and it was fine.
But that was the only time I held him..
Any advice?! D:
He’s always sleeping so what time should I wake him up and hold him?
How should I hold him?
Is it okay to whisper his name and then when he wakes up, lift the igloo?
Or is that bad.. D:
Thankssss!
P.S He’s a black bear syrian hamster. And he’s a male. :]
He bit me once when he was in his hamster ball. I put my hand out and then he bit me..lol
It didn’t hurt. It was more the shock of it that made me jump!
Thank youu!
11 weeks old is definitely not too old to tame a syrian hamster! I got mine when it was 2 months old, and right now it’s completely aware of who i am, and when i’m going to hold him.
You weren’t supposed to hold him when you first got him, but if you just put your hand in his cage, and let him smell you, he will get used to you.
Then after, you could try feeding him through the bars.
Hamsters sleep in the day time and they wake up at night, probably when you’re asleep.
But, after a week of putting your hand and feeding, you could try hand feeding also.
Put a pellet, or a carrot or anything. Just place it on your hand,
and then let him come to you. put your hand out, and when it climbs on to you.
Hold it near your chest, and remember to always be kneeling down.
Your hamster is only 11 weeks old,
it may still be scared of the height, so even if you accidentally drop him,
he won’t injure himself, or break a limb.
It’s okay to whisper his name when he wakes up,but not the best idea to lift the igloo up.
Syrian hamsters will eventually get used to you and not bite you after a while.
They are easy to tame, and they will stay tame even when neglected.
If you need help holding a hamster,
just basically let him climb on to you, but if it’s trying to run away, scoop him up.
put your hand on the butt to support it, and your other hand hold its chest.
Hamsters like walking up and down your arm,
or walking over your arms, so put an arm infront of the other when your hamster reaches over.
If your hamster bites a lot, for the other weeks, wear gloves.
Stroke his back to calm him down.
When he does something naughty, pat gently on his head, and say "No."
Whenever he does something good, like sit in your hands, or does a trick.
Give him a treat! and stroke his back.
Good luck with your hamster!
Hope I helped (:
+ Also! Don’t wake your hamster up,
and definitely do not pick him up after just waking up.
He will bite you, or be annoyed. Remember they groom themselves after they wake up. So let them groom, eat, drink water or whatever they need to do. In an hour or so, you can pick them up. Waking them up, causes them to be annoyed. And if you do it too often, they WILL bite!
+ Wash your hands before and after to prevent your hammie biting!

I agree with the first answer, however, it is unwise to feed through the bars, because that encourages biting. Other than that, that is a good answer.
